How Elon Musk Conducts Candidate BS-Detection

What do Elon Musk and law enforcement agencies have in common?

They both use asymmetric information management (AIM) techniques to spot BS. In Musk’s case, AIM helps weed out candidates who are full of hot air when he interviews for positions at Tesla and SpaceX.

You, too, can use AIM to tell if a candidate is full of it or really knows their stuff. It’s simple: Just ask for more detail.

People who are BSing, bluffing, or exaggerating typically get nervous when asked to provide details about their stories and successes. Law enforcers know this, and that’s why they often ask suspects for more information.

In a job interview context, take the advice of Musk, who says, “The people who really solved the problem, they know exactly how they solved it, they know the little details.”

Now, if you work with a recruiter at The Source and Recruit Company, your candidates are already well vetted before they sit down to chat with you. But this is still a useful hiring hack.
